Appalachian State University Unites Their Community Through Safer Sex Education

In mid-March, students from six different organizations at Appalachian State University hosted the school's second consecutive year of Project CONDOM.

This year's event, "Project Condom Season 2," was held in the university's Blue Ridge Ballroom and featured participants from Alpha Gamma Delta, HSA, Planned Parenthood Generation Action, the Playcrafters, the Red Flag Educators, and University Recreation. Members of WE CAN and the Appalachian Popular Programming Society (APPS) volunteered to help organize the event.

Our team at ONE® donated 10,000 condoms to App State's student designers, who broke off into teams to create a variety of colorful garments. This year's event theme, "The Great Outdoors," was based on the university's close proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains and served as direction for student designers' garment ideas.

To judge the event, organizers selected five judges; four App State faculty members and the CFO for Appalachian’s Student Government Association. These individuals decided on winners for three separate categories: Best Design, Best Connection to Theme, and Best Sexual Health Message.

The Hispanic Student Association (HSA) design scored the highest in all three categories. However, judges for the event decided to award three teams for their strong designs. “Best Design” went to the Playcrafters, “Best Connection to Theme” went to University Recreation, and “Best Sexual Health Message” went to the HSA.

Our team at ONE® is thrilled to provide members of our community with the opportunity to promote safer sex and creativity. Great work to all of those involved in the event at Appalachian State. We look forward to next year!
